Hotel Performance Advisory
A closer look at the operating issue behind the numbers. Independent analysis for hotel owners who need to understand a variance, test an explanation, or decide where to focus.
When a report raises a question, go deeper.
A monthly P&L may tell you that labor exceeded forecast. It may not tell you whether the cause was higher occupancy, overtime, contract staffing, or a productivity problem. Those explanations lead to different decisions.
Thompson Square’s Performance Advisory examines a defined hotel operating question for owners nationwide, with a focus on select-service and extended-stay properties. We connect the financial result with the supporting operating detail, assess the explanation, and identify the questions and options ownership should consider next.
Start with a specific issue.
- Labor and productivity: staffing patterns, hours worked, contract labor, and workload relative to occupied rooms or relevant service activity.
- Expense changes: unusual charges, recurring cost increases, timing differences, and items that need a clearer explanation.
- Revenue performance: rate, mix, ancillary revenue capture, and the operating context behind a revenue variance.
- Forecast assumptions: whether the revenue and expense expectations are supported by current results and a clear operating plan.
Define the question before the work begins.
A focused engagement starts with the property, reporting period, issue, and decision you want to understand. Scope, deliverables, fees, and timing are agreed before analysis begins. Document-based analysis and owner discussions can be completed remotely; any on-site work is arranged separately.
The review may use the P&L, general ledger detail, budget, forecast, prior-year results, staffing schedules, payroll summaries, or other operating reports. We request the information relevant to the question rather than treating every engagement as the same exercise.
Receive a clearer operating explanation.
The output is a focused assessment of what the information supports, what remains uncertain, and which questions merit follow-up. When practical options emerge, we explain the operating considerations behind them. Any estimated financial opportunity is tied to stated assumptions and requires validation.
How this relates to the TS Report.
The TS Report gives ownership a concise view of performance and the issues worth following. Performance Advisory investigates a particular issue in more detail. You can start with either a broad report or a focused question; a deeper engagement is scoped separately.
Useful to owners and management companies.
Management companies can commission a defined review to add analytical capacity, clarify performance explanations, and prepare more focused owner discussions. Independent findings can recognize progress as well as identify concerns. Scope, information access, report recipients, and any follow-up cadence are agreed upfront; who commissions the work does not change the independence of the conclusions.

An independent perspective alongside management.
The management company continues to operate the hotel. Thompson Square provides an owner-focused interpretation of the information and a practical basis for a more informed discussion. This is an operating review, not an audit opinion or assurance engagement.
Tell us the question you want to understand. A high-level description is enough to begin; document requirements and sharing arrangements can be agreed after the scope is clear.
