Hotel Owner-Side Advisory

An independent operating perspective for hotel owners. Support for reviewing performance, following unresolved issues, and asking better questions of the management team.

Bring an operator’s understanding to ownership’s decisions.

Hotel owners receive a steady stream of financial and operating information. The challenge is deciding what deserves attention, whether an explanation is complete, and how to follow an issue over time.

Thompson Square’s Owner-Side Advisory brings an independent interpretation of hotel operations to that process for owners nationwide, including small portfolios of select-service and extended-stay hotels with third-party management. Our perspective is grounded in more than 25 years of hospitality leadership experience, including hotel general management.

Keep the important questions in view.

Advisory support can connect monthly results with the priorities ownership has already identified. Instead of restarting the conversation each reporting period, a clearly scoped review can track the issue, the management explanation, the supporting evidence, and the next review point.

  • Interpret financial results in the context of hotel operations.
  • Identify the variances and assumptions that deserve a closer look.
  • Follow open labor, expense, revenue, and forecasting questions.
  • Prepare focused questions for management discussions.
  • Review whether a stated action is producing the expected operating result.

Use the right evidence for the decision.

A revenue shortfall and a labor overrun may be related, but they should not be treated as interchangeable explanations. Ownership benefits from understanding the volume of business, the cost of servicing it, the timing of expenses, and what management expected to happen.

We use the available reporting to distinguish what can be established from what needs more information. Where an issue calls for a deeper investigation, that work is defined and scoped separately.

“Which issues are still open, what has changed since the last review, and what evidence should ownership expect next?”

Set a clear scope and working rhythm.

Engagements are agreed around the property or portfolio, the priorities, the reporting available, and the support ownership needs. A defined review can be a starting point. Any continuing advisory arrangement specifies the deliverables, review cadence, fees, and boundaries before work begins. Reviews and owner discussions can be conducted remotely, with any on-site support arranged separately.

The starting materials may include the P&L, budget, forecast, prior-year results, and relevant operating detail. Please begin with a high-level inquiry rather than uploading guest or employee personal information through the contact form.

Useful to owners and management companies.

Management companies can commission a defined review to add analytical capacity, clarify performance explanations, and prepare more focused owner discussions. Independent findings can recognize progress as well as identify concerns. Scope, information access, report recipients, and any follow-up cadence are agreed upfront; who commissions the work does not change the independence of the conclusions.

Complement the management team.

Thompson Square does not take over the hotel’s daily operations. The management company retains its operating responsibilities, while ownership receives an independent interpretation and a clearer basis for discussion. Legal, tax, investment, and contractual advice remain with the appropriate professional advisers.

Choose the starting point that fits.

The TS Report provides a concise performance assessment. Performance Advisory examines a defined issue. Owner-Side Advisory connects the reporting with broader ownership priorities and follow-through.
